Modern Montenegro that we know today was created and lived through centuries based on the spirit of a tribal-clans tradition and elements of strong social cohesion.
This historical peculiarity of Montenegro, so rare in Europe, was restored in the late 15th century, in specific circumstances and under the centuries-long threats of the Ottoman Empire. Clans in Montenegro are similar by their concept to the Scottish clans. Several clans in one area make a tribe. Almost every Montenegrin knows to which tribe and which clan they belong.
It is an integral part of the folklore and some Montenegrin clans and tribes, particularly members of older generations living in old villages, have preserved characteristic diversities in language, local customs, manner of preparing food ... When you step on one of Montenegrin mountains, under the old unwritten rules, you have stepped into the territories, pastures and mountain villages of the tribes.
