A journey guided by the aroma and flavor of cheese and pršut
Salivating yet as you read about the delicacies that no local or tourist can ever get enough of? Make sure to try these cheeses: smoked Njeguški, aged Pljevaljski, masni kučki, Kolašin’s famous lisnati (layered), and krajinski fresh goat cheese. As you might expect, each region of Montenegro is known for its own signature type of cheese, and it's up to you to decide where to start your cheese exploration adventure!
Have you heard of cheese as thin as a leaf?
If you travel the cheese routes on Bjelasica, you will be greeted by a centuries-old tradition of making lisnati cheese that delights everyone who tries it. Numerous cheesemakers continue the tradition of making lisnati cheese, primarily in Kolašin, Trebaljevo, Gornji Pažanj, Blatina, Lipovo, Drijenak, Šljivovice, Štitarica, Podbišće, Tomaševo, and Sinjajevina's katuns.
The leaf-thin lisnati cheese, kajmak, kačamak, homemade buttermilk, and jardum (specially prepared sheep's milk) are famous Kolašin delicacies that will delight you. You can not only participate in the production of cheeses in the katuns, but the hosts will also treat you to homemade desserts such as juices, jams, sweets, and teas.
Honey stories and sweet roads
If you don't finish your trip to Kolašin, Mojkovac, or Bijelo Polje with a honey tasting, your story is incomplete. A jar of honey is an amazing souvenir to bring with you! The abundance of medicinal herbs in Montenegro from which bees gather pollen testifies to its high quality.
Your honey stories, however, do not have to end here, but can continue in the Cetinje area and along the magnificent Skadar Lake, then around the Crnojević River and Virpazar. Here you can learn about the healing properties of our honey, as well as some interesting stories, anecdotes, and legends from this area. While you’re there, don't forget to visit the treasures (natural and cultural) that Cetinje and Skadar Lake hold!
