“Alps in the South of Europe”
Mighty peaks pierce the sky, a chamois dashes between jagged cliffs at lightning speed, while herds of goats roam freely...this is Prokletije!
As the name implies, Prokletije or "Damned" speaks to inaccessible and difficult summits, mysterious lakes, steep cliffs and the overall untamed, wild nature of this national park!
Prokletije forms Montenegro's natural border with Albania and Kosovo, and is located in the extreme south of the Dinaric Alps. The peaks are a challenge for even the most experienced mountaineers, with over 20 summits rising beyond 2,500 meters above sea level. There's also the Grlja River's canyon! Prepare for the biggest mountaineering challenge!
Don’t want your visit to Prokletije to be "mission impossible?” Then visit the Lake of Happiness!
This National Park also has a gentler side. Lake Hrid, often known as the Lake of Happiness, is the right place for you. First, make a wish!
Why? Because it is said that if you make a wish, the lake will grant it! You'll see a lot of sparkling jewelry at the bottom, which visitors have been throwing in for years as tokens of their requests
What else to visit?
The youngest national park includes the territories of the municipalities of Plav and Gusinje. Therefore, don’t miss a visit to the historical St. Trinity monastery in Brezojevice, the Redžepagić Tower, and the Old Imperial Mosque. Visit the Vizier's mosque from the 17th century in Gusinje, followed up by Ali-pasha's Springs, which are just a kilometer and a half away! At the Visitor Center, you can get information about hiking and mountaineering routes as well as contact with local guides.
A fateful "yes" on Ali Pasha's springs
Locals who live near Ali Pasha's springs say that the magical, binding "YES" is frequently said exactly here. In a single day one year, 30 marriages were celebrated.
Try “bear onion” or ramsons (wild garlic)!
The specificity of the Prokletije National Park consists of over 1,700 species of plants. Among others, there are ramsons, or broad-leaved, wild garlic.
